Empty Stomach Challenge
Princess, New York City
2015

A beekeeper begins reading a story. The story's words are written in an ever-expanding combination of numbers and symbols. The numbers and symbols are are variables in the evolution of a self-generating algorithm. The algorithm's rate of growth and complexity is accelerated exponentially with the calculation of each sentence. The beekeeper watches in amazement as the code continuously compounds. This is a story about growth.
[Honey, I shrunk the kids.]

The beekeeper now understands a few specific memories from its past as dots connected in an abstract timeline; a count-down to worldwide integration. Juvenile fictions from the past mature into a fact called future as echoes of an empty present find resonance in the form of a relentless crescendo.
[Honey, I blew up the kid.]

The beekeeper folds the story in half, adding dimension to the previously flat narrative. The angle breaks the equation. The algorithm reverses into a degenerative free fall. The incoherent gibberish of an increasingly intricate self-similar pattern crystallizes into a beautiful downward spiral.
[Honey, we shrunk ourselves.]

The story's new edge cuts the suspense. A concluding event appears just over the horizon. A string of taps against a bed of dormant solar panels resembles a fruitless drum-fill awaiting an overdue punch-line. [Honey, we don’t have any more Honey.]

The Mutant and the Melody
Jancar Jones, Los Angeles
2013

'Where has the body of the fable gone?'

The Mutant and the Melody includes two works. Interdependent, each remains in flux for the duration of the exhibition. Like the driving forces in the narrative of a fable, the objects work together to perform a relationship, the dynamic of which can be encapsulated in a pithy maxim about shared human consciousness. In fables these maxims are usually morals. The wording of a moral may vary between cultures, and how a fable is recited may shift over time, but the lessons communicated are for the most part universal. They can reflect a cross-cultural consensus of the human experience.

The objects in this project are based on two maxims that, as they developed into memes, achieved a mantra like status online; "Yolo" and "Pics or it didn't happen". Neither maxim is the moral of the story. Instead, they participate as subjects. Locked in a cycle of a call and response, they work together to frame one decidedly inconsequential paradox of the post-internet age: that it is impossible to exist in a state of pure spontaneity while also working to document that existence.

Fables can serve as a model for understanding the shifts in information hierarchies that are occurring as humanity abandons packaged goods economics for a market based more in conversational media. Today's fables are the result of years of verbal re-duplication. Their dissemination occurred mostly through oral tradition, a system which allowed them to evolve similarly to the way a meme evolves as it’s replicated. Like a meme, a single fable exists in a variety of versions as it moves both horizontally, from population to population within a single generation, and vertically, from generation to generation within a single population.

As networked bodies of informations, fables and memes are structurally similar enough that the two might as well be one in the same. Separate moments in an overall pattern, they are a single system; one fractal, just expressed at different scales. Only in this case, scale isn't a matter of physical space, but some value defined in a relationship between time and quantity/quality of information.
